he UK Covid-19 Inquiry was set up “to examine the UK’s response to and impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, and learn lessons for the future”. At the time of typing this, you can catch up with the developments from the coverage here, or directly from the video recordings here, if you find the time. The evidence that has been presented at the Inquiry is hugely significant, but it is, sadly, nothing truly new.

In this lightning talk I attempted to present a researcher-centred user
experience with the Altmetric Explorer in the context of assessment
requirements, and will focus on offering basic recommendations based on
the challenges, limitations and opportunities that this tool's interface
and data. The talk attempted to prompt a renewed consideration of the
role of altmetrics a decade after their formal inception, and to
reinitate discussions about the ways they may fit (or don't) current
bibliometric and research assessment cultures.

**Julian of Norwich** (late 1342 -- after 1416) was an English
anchorite. She wrote what is thought to be the earliest surviving book
in the English language to be written by a woman, *[Revelations of
Divine Love](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revelations_of_Divine_Love)*.

A José Antonio le decíamos Toño, pero también Toñito, Mitón, Jar, Jarcito, maestro, wey, cabrón, man, José Antonio, todos esos nombres dependiendo del contexto y la ocasión pero a veces también todos al mismo tiempo. Toño fue como un padre para mí, un amigo y un mentor, instructor y guía, patrocinador intelectual y muchas veces financiero y emocional. Fue un ancla y un pilar.
Si hoy en día puedo decir que soy un académico, un investigador, un editor y curador, es principalmente por Toño. Toño y Paty, también conocidos como Patitoño, porque eran/son un organismo simbiótico, una marca registrada, una compañía limitada, una empresa familiar, un proyecto multidisciplinario sin deadline, son co-responsables de prácticamente todo lo que puedo decir que soy hoy, y no estaría escribiendo estas líneas esta mañana de no ser por el rol que han jugado en mi vida. Los tiempos verbales se cuatrapean, porque es aún muy pronto, y porque the time is out of joint, y estamos en duelo.
Toño murió ayer. Apenas había cumplido 60 años en febrero. Suena extrañísimo pero se los digo porque, como cantó el poeta, tengo que llorar mi pena compartiéndola. La pandemia de COVID-19 significa que no pude tomar un avión para estar con mi familia y compartir con ellos aunque fuera sociodistanciadamente. No es la primera vez que pasa que no puedo estar en un funeral, y eso tiene su propia pena y su propio duelo.
Toño murió ayer, y lo que quería decir desde el principio es que una de las primeras enseñanzas que recuerdo él me dio es la importancia de la primera línea en un escrito. &#8220;Los grandes escritores saben cómo empezar un relato&#8221;, me dijo desde siempre, y era como si su criterio de selección y curaduría literarias siempre hubiese sido el de juzgar un libro por la primera línea. De ahí siguieron los ejemplos, las recomendaciones literarias que todos estos años después siguen siendo formativas y definitivas.
Por Toño -y paralelamente por mi padre y mi madre- descubrí a los grandes de la literatura mundial pero sobre todo la estadounidense del siglo XX. Truman Capote, Ernest Hemingway, Francis Scott Fitzgerald, Carson McCullers, J.D Salinger, Dashiel Hammett, Raymond Chandler, pero también autores más relativamente recientes, de género, como Stephen King, Clive Barker y Peter Straub. Toño lo había leído todo en una época sin Internet y sin Wikipedia y sin Amazon, era un geógrafo de los cánones literarios, cinematográficos, artísticos en general, sin discriminación de origen nacional, idioma o género.
Toño murió ayer, y mientras hacía el café alrededor de las 8:20 de la mañana pensaba en Albert Camus y ese libro que él también me regaló, L&#8217;Etranger (El extranjero en su traducción al español), y cómo comienza: &#8220;Aujourd’hui, maman est morte.&#8221;  Pum.
Así son mis recuerdos de Toño, además de millones de otro tipo (tengo docenas de &#8216;reels&#8217; mentales de él bailando música cubana con Paty, sus hijas o mi esposa), donde él me recomendaba libros por cómo comenzaban. Todo Capote, todo John Fante. Toño tenía un gusto claro por novelas y relatos inheremente melancólicos, para él, uno no sabía el significado del blues si no se había leído bien. Yo aseguro que su gusto por la fotografía -y esto lo hablamos varias veces en apasionadas conversaciones sobre W.G. Sebald- era su preferencia por lo melancólico, por la espectralidad y fanstamagoría de la foto y del cine, por la ambición de fijar para el futuro lo finito y perecedero, no sólo como imágenes y culturas visuales sino como tecnologías, como crafts. 
Ya otros harán los recuentos de su extensa bibliografía y museografía, los premios y distinciones que recibió; sus grados y puestos académicos e institucionales. Lo que no puedo dejar de decir es que Toño se perfilaba ya desde siempre como una creatura de otro tiempo y espacio, porque su trabajo de investigación, su investigación, era su vida, su pasión, y puedo verdaderamente asegurar que nunca estuvo motivado por los &#8220;puntajes&#8221; de la evaluación institucional ni la &#8220;reputación&#8221; académicas institucionales.
Antes que incluso hiciera la maestría, ya dejemos el doctorado, Toño tenía un corpus de publicaciones de impacto internacional absolutamente impresionante tanto en calidad como cantidad. Disculpen si me permito decir que ya no hay académicos así. Tampoco los que combinen investigación con práctica no sólo docente sino museográfica y de difusión pública. Antes que el &#8220;public engagement&#8221; fuera buzzword, Toño y Paty, Patitoño, ya lo habían hecho pan de cada día.
Quisiera decir más pero por ahora me obligo a terminar. Es muy difícil escribir sobre los idos sin caer en lugares comunes, ¿pero qué más lugar común para lo humano que la muerte? Habrá tiempo, esperemos, para expandir y compartir y perpetuar.
José Antonio murió ayer. Alguien irremplazable se ha ido pero sigue con nosotros en su legado no sólo profesional sino personal. Termino con esta canción del Trío Matamoros, que tanto le gustaba.

**J**osé Antonio murió ayer. Me llamaron a las 8:20am de la mañana hora
de Londres, Inglaterra, mientras hacía el café y el té sabatinos. Son
seis horas de diferencia así que serían las 2:20 de la madrugada en la
ciudad de México.

En ese momento justo pensaba en él. *And when that happened, I knew it*.

No soy creyente ni supersticioso, pero me impactó -aunque haya razones
lógicas- ese tipo de coincidencia o sincronía cósmica a través de la
distancia. Como un *click*. Y luego un ligero pero clarísimo *snap,*
como cuando se rompe el cordón de un papalote.\*

José Antonio era, es y será mi cuñado, pareja de mi hermana Patricia y
padre, con ella, de Natalia y Camilla.

Cada quien tendrá una versión diferente de su Toño. Versiones
diferentes, todas amalgamadas, yuxtapuestas, sobreimpuestas, veladas y
reveladas. Habría que coleccionarlas y presevarlas todas. Hay diferentes
formas de hacerlo. No es posible sintetizarlo, resumirlo todo. Nadie es
de nadie, somos millones de partículas de polvo estelar y como el polvo
cotidiano es infinito y democrático. No hay quien se libre de él por más
que limpie.
